Quella di Margorie McCall è una storia che ha più il sapore di una creepypasta o di una leggenda che non di una storia vera. Margorie è anche conosciuta come “La signora dell’anello”, ed è nota per la rocambolesca vicenda incentrata sulla sua sepoltura: Margorie è infatti nota come la donna che visse una volta ma venne sepolta due volte.
Tutto ha inizio nel 1705, quando la donna, che vive a Lurgan, Irlanda del nord, si ammala di febbre. Nonostante le cure, la febbre sembra non passare mai, anzi le condizioni di salute della poveretta si aggravano e la donna muore, senza che nessuno sappia, con piena certezza, cosa l’abbia effettivamente portata alla morte. Per evitare il diffondersi della malattia, che a quel tempo poteva provocare altri effetti collaterali molto complicati, la donna viene sepolta in fretta e in furia nel cimitero di Shankill.
Margorie fu sepolta con un prezioso anello, che suo marito non era stato in grado di rimuovere per via del gonfiore che interessava le sue dita. Molti erano a conoscenza di quell’anello, e poco dopo la sua morte, Margorie divenne improvvisamente molto interessante… La sera dopo che Margorie fu sepolta, prima addirittura che il suolo si fosse assestato, i ladri si presentarono alla tomba di Mary e iniziarono a scavare. aprirono la bara e tentarono di estrarre il prezioso anello dalle dita gonfie di Margorie, ma il prezioso gioiello non voleva saperne di uscire dal dito della morta. Allora, i ladri senza scrupoli decisero di segare il dito al cadavere. E grande fu la loro sorpresa quando, segato il dito, un fiotto di sangue assolutamente fresco prese a sgorgare dal moncherino.
E ancor più grande fu la loro sorpresa, ormai trasformata in pura paura, quando Margorie si mise a sedere nella bara, urlando per il dolore, più viva che mai….
I ladri ovviamente scapparono a gambe levate, mentre Mary, una volta sistematasi, uscì dalla sua tomba e si avviò lentamente verso casa, chiedendosi cosa fosse successo e perché si fosse risvegliata al cimitero. Degli ultimi giorni, Margorie non ricordava praticamente nulla, a parte la febbre che non passava.
Arrivata a casa, Margorie bussò alla porta. Suo marito John, un medico, era a casa con i bambini quando sentì bussare alla porta. Rimase in ascolto, impallidendo, e sussurrando ai bambini: «Sembrerebbe il bussare della mamma, ma è impossibile…». Di nuovo bussarono alla porta, e John andò ad aprire, trovandosi di fronte la moglie, più viva che mai, con indossi i suoi vestiti da morta, e col dito che gocciolava sangue sul pavimento… per la paura, il poveretto ebbe un infarto e morì all’istante.
Venne sepolto, ironia della sorta, nella fossa lasciata libera da Margorie.
Quando la donna morì, alcuni anni dopo, venne tumulata a fianco del marito, e una nuova lapide venne messa sulla tomba: Margorie McCall, visse una volta, venne sepolta due volte.
E una gittata di cemento andò a coprire la tomba, per evitare che la donna potesse nuovamente uscire dal sottoterra.
Tuttavia, come ogni storia di questo genere, è fortissimo il sospetto che si tratti solo di una bellisisma leggenda: non ci sono prove nei registri di sepoltura della chiesa che possano rendere veritiera questa storia: nessun registro infatti riporta notizia di una Margorie McCall sepolta nel 1705, né di una Margorie sepolta più tardi… la famosa tomba, tra l’altro, venne realizzata dal contadino William Graham e collocata nel cimitero di Shankill nel 1860.
Folklore o meno, resta una storia davvero curiosa.
